Overview & Resolution Specifications

Adobe Illustrator is a resolution-independent vector graphics application, but setting document units to inches is critical when designing print collateral, packaging, and signboards.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Open Document Setup

Ctrl + Alt + P

Go to File > Document Setup or press Ctrl+Alt+P (Cmd+Option+P on Mac).

2

Set Units to Inches

Under the General section, click the Units dropdown and select "Inches". Click OK.

3

Right-Click Workspace Rulers

Ctrl + R

Press Ctrl+R to reveal rulers, right-click the top or side ruler bar, and choose "Inches" for instant unit switching.

4

Configure Raster Effects to 300 PPI

Go to Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings and verify Color Model is CMYK and Resolution is set to High (300 ppi).

5

Edit Artboards in Inches

Press Shift+O to enter Artboard mode. The Properties panel now displays width and height in physical inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing units in Illustrator degrade vector shapes?
No. Vector shapes in Illustrator are defined by mathematical curves, not pixels. Changing units simply updates the ruler display without altering artwork quality.
